Balayage, highlights or root colour – which suits you?

„I would like to go a bit lighter“ – we hear this almost every day. What that turns into depends heavily on which technique suits your hair, your routine and your budget. Here is an overview.

Root colour: the maintenance option

Here only the regrowth at the roots is coloured to match the existing lengths. It is the gentlest and cheapest option because the lengths are not stressed again.

• Who for: anyone who already has colour and wants to maintain it
• Interval: every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on contrast
• Salon time: low

Highlights: structure and depth

With highlights, individual sections are lightened in foil. The result is more defined and higher in contrast than balayage – you see clearly separated light sections. Depending on whether only the top section or the full head is treated, the effort and price differ considerably.

• Who for: anyone wanting clear lightening and more apparent volume
• Interval: every 8 to 12 weeks
• Note: the regrowth line is more visible than with balayage

Balayage: the soft gradient

Balayage is painted into the hair freehand – hence the name, French for „sweeping“. The result is a soft, natural gradient with no hard root line, like sun-bleached hair. It is the most time-intensive of the three techniques and needs considerably longer in the salon.

• Who for: anyone wanting low maintenance and a natural look
• Interval: often only every 3 to 6 months
• Advantage: the regrowth is practically invisible

So which is right?

As a rule of thumb: if you are happy to visit every few weeks and love clear contrast, highlights serve you well. If you want low maintenance, balayage works out better – even though the single appointment costs more, over a year it often evens out.

In the end, though, your starting hair decides. With heavily damaged or very darkly coloured hair, not every lightening is achievable in one appointment. We assess this beforehand and tell you honestly what is realistic – even if that sometimes means splitting the work across two visits.
